3th annual Digital Consumer Event
On 30 November 2023 at 10.00pm – 14.00pm, the European Commission is organising its third online Annual Digital Consumer Event to discuss the problems consumers are currently facing in the digital transition, with broad public participation, academics, consumer and business associations, and authorities.
The opening speech will be delivered by the Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders, followed by the Chair and Coordinators of the European Parliament’s Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee (IMCO).
During the event, the signing ceremony of the “Consumer Protection Commitment”, consisting of the “Product Safety Commitment” and the “Consumer Digital Rights Commitment”, from online marketplaces will take place.
In addition, two panels will be organised to exchange views with academics, consumer and business associations and national authorities on:
- Addictive design of digital services: Stakeholders have expressed concerns about specific interfaces and functionalities designed to maximise the time and money consumers commit (e.g. unrestricted use of digital means, automatic game, rewards attracting continuous digital consumption, blocking, alerts). How can the EU help address the problems faced by consumers with addictive design?
- The vital importance of proof: Are the current rules on the vital importance of proof in the digital sectorsufficient? Are there cases, especially in the context of the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive, where it would be more effective to shift the burden to the trader?
The event will take place in English without interpretation and will also be available live, so that you can follow without registration.
