FMV TechDay focuses on Future Quantum Sensors with Business Opportunities and Innovative Missions

The Defence Materielverket (FMV) has taken the initiative to drive the development of quantum sensors forward with its TechDay, an event that offers unique business opportunities for start-ups and research groups. This event is part of the FMV Military Innovation Programme (MIP) aimed at detecting and developing civilian technologies with military applications, especially at early stages of development.

Business opportunity

Participants with promising technological ideas may receive a financial investment from the FMV, up to SEK 500 000, to develop their projects over a six-month mission. Total order value is SEK 1 million, with up to three projects receiving funding. Projects shall deliver an analysis or test and a final report describing the implementation and results. The final delivery shall take place no later than 14 June 2024. If no application meets the criteria, no orders will be placed.

Technology

The FMV calls for new innovations in the quantum sensor area on behalf of the Armed Forces. These technologies, at the stage of research or development, are not finished prototypes or products.

Scenario

Whereas the use of quantum technologies can revolutionise tomorrow’s warfare, with quantum sensors that detect new phenomena and bring technological benefits;

Overall objective

The FMV is looking for civilian innovations that can lead to new sensor capabilities and independent navigation for military purposes. It includes signals intelligence, quantum imaging as quantum -LIDAR, and positioning without GNSS. Quantum sensors can also be used to find objects underground or in water.

Task

Participants should clearly explain how their ideas contribute to the above scenario and target image, with the possibility to use visual and audio aids.

Participation and Selection

The application involves a rigorous selection process, where only those with the greatest potential to have their proposals accepted will be invited to present on TechDay. Each proposal will receive 20 minutes of presentation, followed by a jury vote.

Application

Applications must include contact details, a brief summary and a detailed description of the project (max. 500 words and 5 pages). Applications will be sent according to the contact details given. A maximum of three applications per organisation are allowed.

Selection criteria

Selection is based on the relevance of the proposal to the theme of quantum sensors, military relevance, level of innovation, and links with activities of the Armed Forces, FMV or FOI.
