Greek scientific publications in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) show a steady upward trend over the fifteen years 2006-2020. This is evidenced by the study by the National Centre for Documentation and Electronic Content (ECB) ‘Identification and analysis of Greek scientific publications in the field of Artificial Intelligence with Engineering Learning Techniques’ (https://metrics.ekt.gr/publications/633).

Essentially, the ESF publication shows the number of Greek scientific publications in the field of Artificial Intelligence carried out for the period 2006-2020. It also lists the outreach indicators, the main actors active in the field and the international cooperation networks developed by Greek researchers.

The originality of this publication concerns both the indicators it presents and its methodological approach, and Machine Learning techniques were used to identify scientific publications. In particular, the identification and classification of scientific publications as ‘publications in the field of Artificial Intelligence’ took place through the construction, fine-tuning and implementation of the BERT machine learning model. The primary material included publications in scientific journals and conference presentations (conference minutes) and was compiled from the Web of Science, Scopus, SCImago Journal JourCountry Rank, as well as additional international specialised reports.

The study highlights the importance of AI as a key driver of scientific and technological analysis in the 4th Industrial Revolution. Stresses that Artificial Intelligence opens up new horizons, is increasingly concerned with research in many scientific areas, fosters innovative applications in many disciplines, and is at the heart of national and public policies.

Findings of the report

The scientific output of Greek bodies in publications related to Artificial Intelligence can be described as dynamic as a total of 4.425 scientific publications related to Artificial Intelligence have been identified over the last fifteen years. More specifically, in 2006, only 135 publications were recorded, giving their place to the 444 publications in 2020, which is the highest performance of the reference period focused on this survey.

With regard to the entities producing these publications, universities occupy the top three positions. In particular, the University of Patras ranks first with 631 publications, followed by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki with 556 publications and the National Technical University of Metsovo with 448 publications. The Foundation for Technology and Research (HEI) with 322 publications ranks fourth. In the remaining rankings we meet the University of Piraeus with 296 publications, the Dimokritio University of Thrace with 260 publications, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (EKPA) with 250 publications and the Polytechnic University of Crete with 198 publications.

Finally, there is the development of a dynamic network of cooperation between Greek stakeholders in diligent AI publications involving more than seventy countries including Great Britain, the US, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, China, Cyprus, the Netherlands and Belgium.
