National Strategy for AI

The Danish National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence published in March 2019, was developed by Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Industry, Business, and Financial Affairs. The Danish strategy sets out the goals and visions for AI development in Denmark, it presents the challenges to be addressed and identifying specific policy initiatives and priority areas.

The Danish government will focus efforts within four areas on ensuring:

  • Responsible foundation for artificial intelligence.
  • More and better data for the development of new solutions using artificial intelligence.
  • Strong competences and new knowledge.
  • Increased investments in artificial intelligence.

Competence, skill and knowledge development

As one of the four priority focus areas Danish government has emphasized – strong competences and new knowledge. The Strategy outlines the critical importance of digital competences in leveraging the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) across businesses and the public sector. It emphasizes the need for skilled IT specialists with experience in developing and using AI, as well as general digital competences for employees to effectively integrate AI into their work. Given Denmark’s shortage of highly skilled IT specialists, the strategy emphasizes the importance of new training programs in higher education and increased investments in research.

Government has planned on implementing the following initiatives:

  • Dialogue with research funding foundations on artificial intelligence.
  • Stronger digital competences in central government.
  • Strong Danish participation in the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation.
  • Stronger digital competences through adult, continuing and further education.
