Teaching professions face rapidly changing demands requiring a new, broader and sophisticated set of skills than before. The ubiquity of digital devices and applications in particular requires educators to develop their digital competence.
The European Framework for the Digital Competence of Educators (DigCompEdu) is a scientifically sound framework that describes what it means for educators to be digitally competent. It provides a general reference framework to support the development of educators’ specific digital skills in Europe. DigCompEdu targets educators at all levels of education, from early childhood education to higher and adult education, general and vocational education and training, special needs education and non-formal learning contexts.
DigCompEdu details 22 competencies organised in six Areas. It does not focus on technical skills. Rather, the framework aims to detail how digital technologies can be used to improve and innovate education and training.
The DigCompEdu study builds on previous work to define the digital competence of citizens in general and digitally competent educational oragnisations (DigCompOrg). It contributes to the Commission’s recently approved Skills Agenda for Europe and the Europe 2020 flagship initiative An agenda for new skills for new jobs.
