Computerphile is a Youtube channel that regularly publishes videos about computers and related ICT topics. The content produced is interesting, informative and easily explained while also being completely accessible and free.
In this video, the discussion revolves around the particular question: “It’s absolutely everywhere, but what is TLS and where did it come from?“
TLS or, in the extended version Transport Layer Security, is a cryptographic protocol designed to provide communications security over a computer network. The topic is explored by Dr Mike Pound, who explains the background behind this ubiquitous Internet security protocol in a content pill of around 15 minutes.
In fact, the protocol is widely used in applications such as email, instant messaging, and voice over IP, but its use in securing HTTPS remains the most publicly visible. The TLS protocol aims primarily to provide security, including privacy (confidentiality), integrity, and authenticity through the use of cryptography, such as the use of certificates, between two or more communicating computer applications. It runs in the presentation layer and is itself composed of two layers: the TLS record and the TLS handshake protocols.
For the full background and related details, the video is accessible through the link below. Students and citizens that want to know more about computer systems and related topics are invited to check out the channel and the numerous informative videos that are being constantly provided.
